I am beginning my first year at Correia Middle School and my third year as music teacher for the San Diego Unified School District. My wife, two dogs (Brandi & Kirby), and I moved out here in August of 2004 from Chicago Illinois, and we all love it here! We especially enjoy the 'severe' winter months we have around here (burrrrr!).
Many of you may be thinking, "Who is this new guy, Mr. Dwyer?" To begin with, I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. After completing high school I moved to New York City to attend college at The Juilliard School. At Juilliard I studied music performance (I am a trombone player, for those who are wondering) and received a Bachelors Degree in music. After this, I moved to Chicago to attend Northwestern University where I received a Masters Degree in music. Upon completing this degree, I remained in Chicago and performed professionally on trombone playing various styles of music in many different ensembles. I built a private lesson studio where I worked individually with students and also worked with brass ensembles at a few of the area public schools. While I was working with these students, I discovered my enthusiasm for teaching and decided to return to school one last time in order to become a certified teacher in the field of music education. In 2004, I began teaching for the San Diego Unified School District at Kroc Middle School. While at Kroc, I was responsible for teaching and administering two levels of band, two levels of choir, and an orchestra. During my tenure, the program doubled in size and my ensembles participated in several festivals, and community performances. My ensembles were also featured on the KUSI morning news, and performed with the San Diego Symphony. In addition to teaching at Kroc, I also assisted Madison High School with their marching and drumline programs. I do still enjoy playing trombone professionally as a freelance musician in the San Diego area and I play trombone with the La Jolla Symphony Orchestra.
I am very excited to be here at Correia and find the staff extremely supportive and the students exceptionally talented. I look forward to helping our school and our students build a spectacular music program this year.
