PLastic Food Wrap
Posted on 1/29/2010 11:09 PM by Josh
I was required due to my project requrments to test if brand name is a suitable measure for plastic food wrap durability. It turned out that that was incorrect, some of the most popular nationwide plastic food wrap brands were just as successful as some low level store brand names. I needed to make sure that my method of testing was the same every single time in order to have accurate results. Those were to make sure I had the same amount of plastic wrap on each test subject, make sure I did not allow the ice wrapped up in the plastic to melt, and to make sure I constructed each test subject the same so that one will not melt faster than the other.

Our pollution is slowly killing our earth and affecting the species that live on it. Recycling will limit the pollution by making use of what is called "trash". We used appeal to emotion, hyperbole, and rhetorical question as our persuasive techniques.

Persuasive Techniques: Statistics Appeal to Authority Appeal to Noble Cause Appeal to Reason Non-Verbal Communication
Our dependence on fossil fuels and forein oil have led us to an energy deficit that many would believe is a trench we cannot climb our way out of. But history has a secret. In civilizations as ancient as Pompeii, brilliant minds have found a way to utilize the resources of the Earth to our own advantage. Geothermal energy, coming from the Greek roots "Geo", meaning Earth and "Thermal" meaning heat, harnesses the heat trapped deep inside of the Earth's crust and turns it into a renewable and sustainable energy source. There are many different systems, generators and turbines that can collect the heat and create electricity. Geothermal energy is a renewable resource, meaning that we can use it over and over again without ever having to worry about running out. The power plants used do not take up much space, and it is also inexpensive because wedo not need to import it. Because the heat is stored directly in the crust prior to extraction, it can be found practically anwhere. However, areas with high tectonic activity are the most prime location. Because it is so plentiful, the potential as an energy source is immense. In 1904, the first electricity from this source was created in Larderello, Italy, and since that time about 7,000 megawatts have been generated in 21 countries around the world. America's efforts have led to the production of 2,700 megawatts. This geothermal energy amounts to saving sixty million barrels of oil per year. (Geothermal Education Office) How can we use this energy? Electricity, of course, but also agriculture, heating and industrial uses as well.

1. We gathered information about both sides of the topic (which of two options was a more successful government system) and created a descriptive outline to act as a foundation for the essay portion of the project, the script, and eventually the final product (movie). 2. We used counterarguments, facts, and persuasive techniques to put together a storyboard and script, which would be used as an effective guide for the movie. We also determined the props, filming location, and camera angles that would be used throughout the infomercial. 3. The final step in the project was creating the movie. In order to do so persuasively and effectively we used persuasive techniques like word choice, music, quotes, and props with additional effects to make sure our voices were heard.

Protecting the People's Rights: Why the Separation of Church and State is the Best Form of Government
Thesis: The separation of church and state truly is the more effective way to run a country. It allows the citizens the most religious freedom possible, instead of oppressing the peoples rights as was done by the Islamic nations. The Three Steps of Our Project: Essay- We each wrote an essay arguing either for or against the separation of church and state. Script- We transcribed one of the essays into a script for use in our movie. Movie- We filmed and edited an infomercial arguing for the separation of church and state. Standards addressed: 7.2.3. Explain the significance of the Qur’an and the Sunnah as the primary sources of Islamic beliefs, practice, and law, and their influence in Muslims’ daily life. 7.2.4. Discuss the expansion of Muslim rule through military conquests and treaties, emphasizing the cultural blending within Muslim civilization and the spread and acceptance of Islam and the Arabic language. 8.1.2. Analyze the philosophy of government expressed in the Declaration of Independence, with an emphasis on government as a means of securing individual rights (e.g., key phrases such as “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights”). 8.2.6. Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution and the fundamental liberties ensured by the Bill of Rights.

In this movie, we chose to support the how the American government ruled with Separation of Church and State over the Islamic way of intertwining religion and government. In order to get to this step of creating the video, we had to take a three step process. These steps were to create an essay, then a script, and last was to shoot the movie. In this video we address many standards of both the 8th and 7th grade level. These include 2.4 Deliver persuasive presentations: a. Include a well-defined thesis (i.e., one that makes a clear and knowledgeable judgment). b. Differentiate fact from opinion and support arguments with detailed evidence, examples, and reasoning. c. Anticipate and answer listener concerns and counterarguments effectively through the inclusion and arrangement of details, reasons, examples, and other elements. d. Maintain a reasonable tone

7.2.5.- Describe the growth of cities and the establishment of trade routes among Asia, Africa, and Europe, the products and inventions that traveled along these routes (e.g., spices, textiles, paper, steel, new crops), and the role of merchants in Arab society.
7.2.6.- Understand the intellectual exchanges among Muslim scholars of Eurasia and Africa and the contributions Muslim scholars made to later civilizations in the areas of science, geography, mathematics, philosophy, medicine, art, and literature
8.1.2.- Analyze the philosophy of government expressed in the Declaration of Independence, with an emphasis on government as a means of securing individual rights (e.g., key phrases such as “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights”).
8.2.5.- Understand the significance of Jefferson’s Statute for Religious Freedom as a forerunner of the First Amendment and the origins, purpose, and differing views of the founding fathers on the issue of the separation of church and state.

Effects of Patterns of Immigration
Posted on 6/12/2008 4:35 PM by Hailey, Keally, Toby, Will
Immigration is and will always be a key factor in the mixing and co-mingling of cultures, laws and written codes, languages, societal structures, and religion.
The Four Steps of the Process: 1. Inspiration- This was the first part, where we all created sub-sections of the grander aspect, which was the numerous effects of immigration throughout history, and formed a stable thesis. 2. Storyboard- The four of us collaborated, using Google Presentations, and formed a rough outline of each part of our documentary, having split up the work so each person had an equal amount of work to do. This also included various pictures, located through diverse sites, some of which never even made it into the documentary. 3. Essay/Script- Using what we had learned through the project thus far, and conducting additional research if needed, each person in our group wrote an essay surrounding our thesis, with factual evidence to support the statement. From each of the essays, we were able to then extract the main points about each example of immigration and create a script, which would then be read as a voice-over for the documentary. 4. Movie- The final portion of the process, creating and editing the movie, took the most amount of time and focus. We used relevant pictures and music to support our thesis and supporting paragraphs, and then recorded one of our group member's voices to place over the visual and auditory presentation. After the initial compilation, we edited the movie and added final touches. Our presentation was then ready to publish to the internet.

Shared Natural Resources
Posted on 6/12/2008 4:29 PM by By Alex, Daniel, Jessica, and Tessa
There were four steps in this project. First, as a group, we created a graphic organizer. We chose to do a PowerPoint. Then we made a storyboard, in which we organized the pictures into the way we wanted the movie to be. In the next step, each of us created an essay that would later be combined to create a script. Finally, we put together our documentary. All of it came together, the information, the pictures, and the script. We recorded our script over the movie, and that is the process our class used to create these movies. Our thesis is: Throughout the ages, in many different places, people have had to make do with the few natural resources of their land, sharing with each other. The lack of sufficient natural resources to easily support people and societies can be seen as a pattern in history, in places such as Rome, the Silk Road, Japan, and Africa. The standards for our documentary were from 6th and 7th grade. 6.6 #7 (Students analyze the significance of the Silk Road) 6.7 (Students analyze the development of Ancient Rome) 7.4 (Students analyze the civilizations of Medieval Africa) 7.5 (Students analyze the civilizations of Medieval Japan)

How the evolution of transportation changed human history.
1. Graphic organizer 2. Storyboard 3. Essay 4. Movie
As social ties are made between communities throughout history, new transportation technology is developed to help better sustain these bonds. As technology is developed problems arise that cancel out all of the ideal effects associated with that form of transportation. The Social Impacts of Transportation
Posted on 6/12/2008 12:35 PM by Aaron, Ryan, Courtney, Monica
Process: We first had to find information and pictures (and to keep their links/URL). Secondly, we had to start our iMovie. We then had to write a script and recording our voiceovers. After that we had to edit (which took a long time) and putting in our music.
Thesis: With the progression of transportation there have come great social and economic benefits, as it establishes communication, but with benefits comes the fact of differentiation of beliefs. This results in warfare, conflict, and upheaval of any established bonds between societies.

First we had to gather pictures and save the sites they were on. Next we had to put it all into a movie in the order we decide (we did chronological order). Then we had to make some songs in garage band to put into the movie. Then in the end we put in titles, and voice-overs. (we are having a problem with the sound on cars and planes, we will try to fix it)

Religion-Influenced Desicions
Posted on 6/12/2008 11:54 AM by Ryan, Matt, Sab, and Brett
The thesis our group had for our movie was that though religion can be a great force for good, when taken too far, to an extreme, it can become a terrible force for destruction. In order to produce the final product playing to the left, we followed a four-step process. At the same time, this four-step process had to be completed by four group members who were each in a separate class, presenting yet another obstacle. The first step in this process was to create a graphic organizer, a basic outline for how we wanted the movie to work. It was mostly pictures, with only a few blocks of text to explain some of the photos. The next step was to create a more detailed form of the graphic organizer, a storyboard. This included more text than the organizer, almost the full movie, just not in a video format. The last thing we had to do before we could start the movie was write a script, so that we would know what we needed to say in the movie. After that, the final step was to actually create the movie, by uploading all of the images to iMovie and then recording the audio to go with it. Our movie, after it was complete, addressed many History Standards from many different grades. These include: 6.3, 6.7, 7.2, 7.6, 7.8, 7.9, 10.1, 10.10, and 11.9.

1.This whole process includes four steps that were different assignments. The first step to this process was to research our topic and talk about what we were going to do in our groups.Second on the tasks list was to make an inspiration, this had to have your thesis, facts, and pictures about our topic. The third step was to make a storyboard with pictures for our movie that we had found, but at the same time making a bibliography of the internet websites. Then every person in our group wrote essays and with those essays you had to write a script for your movie.Using the script you wrote and the pictures you found, you have to make a movie. In this movie you have to have your standards, credits, voices, pictures, and be about your thesis.
2.Have you ever wondered how life would be without the Mexican-American borders? These walls have kept these two countries apart for many years, but how did all this start?Throughout 1846- 1848 there was a war, called the Mexican -American war that made these two countries fight over California. #4 Grey Group: Hate Crimes, Now and Then
Posted on 6/11/2008 5:24 PM by Dana, Daniel A, Joel, and Miranda
In making the documentary, we first made a graphic organizer describing how each topic in the documentary was linked together. Then we made a basic storyboard to lay out a plan on how each scene in the movie would work with one another. We then came up with our script; this involved each one of us writing a narrative essay on our topic, and taking snippets out of each to form the script. After this, using pics mostly found on the web, we made our documentary using iMovie. Our movie primarily describes hate groups and their effect on society throughout history. The definitive thesis is: History has seen hate groups of many kinds that have risen in different time periods, places, and cultures. They have each been influential to many others, and have helped hate and discrimination evolve and grow, even doing so in today's society. Their ideals and methods have been repeated throughout history, each having been tied together with similar motives towards different groups of people. Standards addressed are 7.9.7, 8.11.4, and 10.8.5.

Civil Rights Activists
Posted on 6/11/2008 3:15 PM by Aaron, Benjamin, Brooke, and Caitlin
This historical documentary was made between 4 different class periods. We used programs on the internet (google products) that allowed us to collaborate and work together as a team. In this project we had to follow 4 steps that would help us understand the process of movie making and our pattern in history. First we graphically organized our subject of civil rights activists so that we could gather pictures and understand our thesis. Then we made a storyboard of what our movie would look like when we were finished in it. After that we scripted our story so that we knew what we would say and finally we turned our pattern in history into a video. Our thesis in this subject was that throughout history civil rights activists have had a positive effect in history. The standards that we addressed were: 1. 7.6 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the civilizations of Medieval Europe. 2. 8.6 Students analyze the divergent paths of the American people from 1800 to the mid-1800s and the challenges they faced, with emphasis on the Northeast. 3. 8.9 Students analyze the early and steady attempts to abolish slavery and to realize the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. 4. 11.10 Students analyze the development of federal civil rights and voting rights.
